During a July 4th event, I talked with several college kids who told me they prefer to give out their cell phone numbers instead of email addresses. The latter brings spam and viruses. Phones don't. If they don't recognize a number, they just delete it. However, you can put the first couple of words in the text indicating your message. If it's interesting, kids will open it up.
And they're teaching this same strategy in public relations classes at the University of North Carolina.
Marketing Tip: Collect cell phone numbers. Promote your event using text messaging!
